2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Hires
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete content from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our players.
The trust in this project grows every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After a period of talks, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
David
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
The game lacks an official release date or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as development progresses.
