Golf England Seeks Public Support for the year 2030 Women's Golf Showcase Bid

The most recent Solheim Cup taking place in Europe was in Spain in 2023, with the next tournament set for Holland in 2026.

After the latest Ryder Cup victory, the national golf association is urging the government to support their proposal to host the Solheim Cup on English soil for the very first occasion.

This renowned competition pitting the top women players from Europe and the United States has taken place twice in Scotland and in Wales yet never on English territory. A bid has been put together to stage it at the Grove venue in Hertfordshire eight years from now.

But organizers are seeking £30m to back the bid and currently only £10m has been secured. The organizing body is pressing for Treasury support to cover the shortfall.

Financial Needs and Timeline

Discussions to obtain public funding began earlier this year but a decision on whether backing will be granted is required quickly. The hosting rights for the 2030 event belong to the International Management Group who require a decision within the current month.

Per the proposal papers, England Golf believes that a successful bid "represents substantial returns to the nation".

"We believe currently it's right and proper that the Solheim Cup should be hosted on English soil," stated England Golf's chief executive.

He continued: "We have produced so many players historically and maintain this tradition, including top English players, Georgia Hall, or Lottie Woad."

When asked the benefit to the taxpayer, the chief executive explained: "Recent events show the significant influence that huge golf events can generate concerning both local and national economies."

He continued: "That's certainly what we anticipate will occur from a Solheim Cup perspective, whether it's the investment that would occur throughout the event or whether it be job creation."

Financial Details

To host the men's tournament on European soil needs more than £400m however for the women's event it is around £30m.

"We require circa £20m in public funding to guarantee it," the executive stated.

"This amount supplementing already a significant investment from both venue and England Golf including additional sponsors we intend to put money in."

"There exists a strong pipeline of tournaments over the coming years, from the Women's T20 World Cup in 2026 through to supporting a bid to organize the Fifa Women's World Cup in the future."

"Support for future bids will depend on a range of criteria particularly how effectively they produce community and financial advantages to the nation."
