UK Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Nations
The UK government has added an additional eleven further nations to its travel alert roster regarding the threats of industrial alcohol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only recently, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after several high-profile events such as the tragic death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within 12–48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.
Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.
Official Guidance for Tourists
Foreign Office official a senior official emphasized that each tourist should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"When you are drinking spirits overseas, choose reputable establishments and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.
